Wines

Our wines

The wines listed in our new website and catalogue feature many old favourites and some exciting new finds, from both the Old and New Worlds.

We take pride in finding wines from specialist growers who are dedicated to making wines of individual character and style that offer good value and exclusivity.

These include such noteworthy names as Gouguenheim from Argentina, Juniper Estate from Margaret River in Western Australia, Alan McCorkindale from New Zealand, Domaine du Vieux Telegraph in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rioja Tobelas from Bodegas La Encina, and Domaine Daulny Sancerre.

Spirits

Our spirits

Our expanding list of spirits and liqueurs from around the world includes many artisan, premium quality, limited editions, and unusual items.

The rediscovery of traditional styles of drinks, especially for gin, aperitifs, and vermouth, gives people the opportunity to experience stimulating new pleasures. We list numerous ingredients such as bitters and superior liqueurs from Giffard and Merlet which are essential ingredients for cocktails. We have a big range of aged whiskies from Scotland and around the world. Exciting new Mezcals complement our already extensive range of tequilas.

Our History

Laurence Smith & Son was established in 1883 by the grandfather of the present owner, and nowadays a fourth generation of the Smith family (Duncan) runs the business. The company is a founder member of the Merchant Vintners Company, a UK-wide consortium of independent wine merchants, whose combined strength allows the sharing of knowledge, expertise, and buying power.

Our Strengths

The company distributes a wide range of fine wines, whiskies and spirits (including many unusual imported varieties) to all sections of the licensed trade, and to many private and corporate customers. We supply many of the top hotels, restaurants, and style bars in central Scotland.

Pinot Noir, Paparuda, Cramele Recas, 2013

You’ll find that pinot noir is usually pretty pricey, but this is a cracking pinot for the money. Offering bright cherry fruit with plums, it also shows spice and a hint of vanilla sweetness. Romania is showing real promise at this point.

Pinot Grigio, Paparuda, Cramele Recas, 2013

Amazingly vivid with bright, aromatic lemon and pear fruit, this is a fine all-purpose dry white. If only more Pinot Grigio was like this.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico, Pontemagno 2013

This is a terrific wine at a terrific price which kept very well in the fridge overnight, losing very little of its delicate but definite aroma. It has a slight floral note but the main aromas and flavours are citrus and almond and something I'd describe as stony, which is part of the texture - a fine and slight dry firmness which adds both interest and length of flavour. I don't think I have ever used the term 'lip-smacking' to describe a wine but this one qualifies thanks to the crisp lemony taste. Good with or without food.
