Bordeaux is the largest fine wine growing area in the world, with styles ranging from the grand vins of the classed growths to generic Bordeaux Rouge. Demand for the top chateaux often exceeds supply but basic wines are struggling to find any buyers, even at prices below production costs. The soils of Medoc and Graves produce long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon based wine, while Saint Emilion and Pomerol, with their clay soils, are home to the early-ripening Merlot.Most white Bordeaux wines are dry and for immediate consumption. About 10% are the great sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac. The Sauvignon grape is sometimes made dry and unblended for its crisp, sharp freshness, but when blended with Semillon it is at its best, giving fuller and rounder wines.
