The Champagne region is France’s most northerly wine-producing zone, the vineyards being located mainly in the departments of the Marne and the Aube. The porous quality and mineral richness of the chalky bedrock give the wines of Champagne their finesse. The grape varieties used are the Pinot Noir (the noble black grape), the Chardonnay, and the Pinot Meunier. Champagne is not named after a particular vineyard, but sold under the name of one of the many Champagne Houses.
