Chile has a unique style and standard of wine-making. Vines originally came from Bordeaux in 1881, just before phylloxera, the root-killing louse, devastated the vineyards in France. Chile is the only major wine-producing country not to have its vines grafted onto American rootstocks. Both the climate, which is warm with sufficient rainfall, and the soil, which allows excellent drainage, make growing conditions in the Maipo Valley in central Chile, ideal. The Bordeaux grape varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc, are the most widely planted.
